Winner: Geoff and Donna Legg - August 2007
Overview
In November 2006, we installed a 21’ above ground swimming pool. So began our summer of 2007 house project. My sister, Dee, and her Husband, Bob, came from NEW York State to help, so we began with a Bob the Builder day.
Our original 12 x 36 foot deck with steps to the backyard has been in place since 1994. We set about planning how to connect the pool and the existing deck and have something that was nice to look at and secure for the pool. Being do-it-yourselfers we searched the internet for help to design and construct our deck after seeing the floating foundation deck system blocks at our local home improvement store. We hit the jackpot! Your web site gave us everything we needed, including materials lists, to design, plan and construct our deck. As you can see from the pictures we printed the pages from your website, studied them, put in a lot of hard work and we ended up with a beautiful deck that is the envy of the neighborhood. We had assistance from three generations to complete this project.
The new deck was going to require two levels because of the slope of the land. First, Geoff removed the deck boards and railings from the existing deck. Although it was sound, everything was sagging from 20 years of use and North Carolina weather. We tightened every joint and added some additional pillars. What a noticeable difference! After adding new deck boards and rails it looks brand new.
The next step was adding a 8 x 16 foot deck that connected the pool to the existing deck. The new deck was 2 steps lower than the old deck so using the floating foundation deck system it was easily tied into the new deck with a seamless drop to the new level. Stairs were added at both ends of the deck, complete with locking gates to keep the pool secure.
As you can see from the pictures, our new outdoor space is complete. It is like having another room on the house.
Thank you for a good product and a very user friendly website.
