Optimal spacing of 4x8 plywood sheets for 12x16 shed floor 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Deckman,
I searched the forums & plans for this answer before posting. Do you recommend a pattern for having the least amount of 4x8 plywood waste when building a 12x16 shed floor?
How many sheets will I need?
Also, I read a post from last year referencing a different block spacing for a shed floor vs. a deck floor. I purchased 24 blocks. Will I need more?
I reviewed the shed floor plans, but didn't see any reference to differences in block/joist spacing.

On a side note, I have a bad back and will be building this myself, so I can't safely lift any part of the structure once it's in place in order to install 4x4 posts on inner blocks. I plan to run a staked and leveled string along each row of blocks before placing the inner joists, so I can premeasure and install all my 4x4 posts and then place the inner joists. It seems easier that way.

Thanks in advance!

The following plan will show the most efficient layout for the plywood. You will need 6 - 4x8 sheets. deckplans.com/pdfs/plans/SSL12W16.pdf

The plan with plywood calls for 28 piers. This is 4 more than using 2x6 decking due to the plywood needs to be supported every 24 inches on center.

The only issue with cutting the post first is the that not every board is exactly straight. The trick to not lifting the frame out is to only install one screw at the top of the support board at each end. Then you can measure for the 4x4. When inserting, rotate the support board up, place the post and rotate the support back down.

Thanks Deckman. I missed those plans by not selecting plywood as a dropdown option. Great tip on the single screw. I will go with that method. That would be a nice tip to include in the general instructions, by the way.

I am curious about one element in the 12x16 plywood shed floor plans, and that's the blocking boards. I can see why they'd be necessary where the plywood pieces butt together, but I don't grasp how they would provide any additional structural strength, which is the only reason I can see them used so extensively. Can you shed some light on this (forgive the pun).

The blocking board gives support to the plywood sheets where they join end to end. With out them the floor will not feel as solid and the board may dip down when weight is applied. We recommend using them.

Deckman,
I definitely agree about blocking where the plywood joins. I was confused because it looks like blocking is indicated every few feet in every bay.
Thanks for the help
