On your 16 x 16 side deck plan on your website you start with the rectangular section, which in this case looks pretty easy since you only need to use a single piece to span the entire length of the deck.

For the deck that I have in mind I will need join a 10 foot and an 8 foot piece in order to span the entire length.

How should I start the deck???

Join your boards with a truss plate and center a Dek-Block under the joint. Take a look at the 18 x 18 rectangular plan for suggested lay out and compare it to the side pool deck for the layout around the pool.

I attached a block layout link for further reference

Will the truss plate be strong enough to temporarily hold the 18 ft board (10 + 8) to the furthest outside block without any support under the joint?
