TOPIC: Low Deck in Miami FL

Low Deck in Miami FL 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I am considering using the Dek-Block system to build a 14x34' deck in my backyard. One of the concerns I have is I want the deck to be on the ground. I don't want or need the added height of the dek blocks. Do I even need to use them? Can I just build a deck structure and lay it on the ground as long as I level the ground first?

Low decks are always difficult. Given an option of building a deck on the ground or a deck 3 feet high I would build a deck 3 feet high. The problem with a low deck is in leveling the ground. its very very difficult. Another problem is putting the deck directly on the ground. You need at least 1-1/2" of clearance under the deck so water can drip off the bottom and the deck can dry. Putting a deck directly on the ground is not something we recommend doing.

We live in Connecticut. The step out through the slider from our sun room to the ground is about 9 1/2". I need to build my 16'x16' deck low enough so the height from the decking material to the ground is no more than 8" so it is just below that 9 1/2" step height.

You said the deck blocks should not be buried. Would this work?
1. Excavate the area and level
2. Spread 3"-4" of stone and level
3. Lay 4x4 PT beams 4' apart
4. Affix 4x4 PT beams 4' apart(?) perpendicular to the beams that are laying on the stone
5. Screw 1x2 PT decking to the top beams

If you need a deck height of 9-1/2" Then you can excavated the area remove 6" of topsoil. Then add a couple of inches of gravel. You should be able to set the blocks on top to achieve your height. 4x4 posts should not be used as joists.
