4x6 support boards to lessen number of blocks? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I know that the FAQ's say there is no way to reduce the number of blocks used, but I just want to be sure. I wish to build a 8x10 deck. Can I use 4x6 support boards at 1', 4', 8' on dek blocks spaced 4'10" apart, then use 2x6 support boards at 2', 6', with joist hangers hung to the a 2x6 end board, then blocked into the dek blocks, as well as other positions at 2.5' O.C. into the 4x6 support boards I ask because this is exactly the scrap material I have. Thanks for any help.

The FAQ's are correct. The decks are designed to use a minimal number of blocks. The experience we've had when decks are built that use fewer blocks than we recommend is that the decks are very wobbly. If you decide to add joist hangers i don't think you will be saving any money. The number of Joist hangers needed will add up in hurry and the cost may actually be more than if you build the way we recommend.
