More Dec-Blocks w/ 5/4 surface than 2x6? 5 Years, 9 Months ago
I ran the calcuations for a 12' x 20' rectangular deck using both the choices offered for surface material. The plans using 2x6 surface boards requires 30 dec-blocks.

The plans using 5/4" surface boards requires 50 dec-blocks.

No other changes to the plans were made other than the surface board material.

Why does the 5/4" surface boards require an additional 20 dec-blocks?

5/4 treated and composite decking do not have the same degree of span strength that a 2x6 treated board does. 5/4 and composite boards are thinner and they tend to have rounded edges (which also decrease the over all strength of the board). For this reason a narrower span between support boards is required (16" OC). This requires more blocks and support boards for the project.
