TOPIC: Tools Required

Tools Required 5 Years, 9 Months ago
I consider myself a handy person. I am an electrician by trade.... I have some friends who are going to help me with this deck, but would like to know what tools are necessary for this? Probably a dumb question, but will help me to be prepared. Thanks!

I built 2 decks with this system. For the first one I owned no power tools except for a drill, so I leveled the deck by digging the blocks into the ground with a shovel rather than using cut 4x4's. I used the drill to screw the screws into the deck. It took my wife and I 6 hours to build a 12x12.

My next project was 2 decks wrapped around the original. I had obtained a circular saw and saw horses by then, so I used the saw to cut 4x4's to level the deck.

I would say you need;

1. Drill

2. Circular saw

3. Hammer

4. Measuring tape. (to measure for square)

5. Level

6. Beer

I would modify the above list with the following:
A. Cordless drill with screw attachment (w'/ removable bits)

B. Chalk line w/ blue chalk

The cordless drill (or another power drill with screwdriver attachment) allows you to screw the decking on, which will allow you to more easily re-tighten the fasteners when the treated wood dries out and shrinks. Screws also don't loosen up as they age like nails.

You can use the chalk line to lay out straight lines for putting screws into the decking boards that are aligned with the support boards. Be sure to use the blue chalk line - the chalk washes off in a couple of weeks. The red-tinted chalk is permanent.

I found that a corded drill works best, because you don't run out of juice. Even with 2 batteries for my 18v B&D cordless, I still had to get the corded drill out. I love cordless drills, though.

Yep,

I used a cordless drill to begin, but still had to switch to a corded one. Thats why my list simply said "drill" :)

The chalk line is a great idea. I just eyeballed the screws, but a chalkline would have made the job that much cleaner.
